Jonathan Henshaw

I did my PhD with Hanna Kokko and Michael Jennions at the Australian National University, followed by a postdoc with Adam Jones at the University of Idaho. I've been a Junior Professor at the University of Freiburg since April 2020.

Outside of work, I like birding, diving, hanging out with my family, and finding new ways to combine these activities.

My Erdős number is 5.

Xiaoyan Long (Postdoc)

I did my PhD with Weissing Franjo, Jan Komdeur and Tamas Szekely at the University of Groningen. Since June 2022, I have been a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Freiburg. I have broad research interests, including parental care, mate choice, cooperation and conflict, and competition. Moreover, I have extensive experience in theoretical modelling, phylogenetic analysis and fieldwork.

Stephan Lohmar (PhD student)

I finished my master studies in biology at the University of Freiburg with a thesis on the structuring mechanisms of termite communities in the savanna of the Ivory Coast. I am interested in major evolutionary transitions, especially the transition from organism to superorganism.

Stephan is co-supervised by Prof. Judith Korb.

Mohammadali Dashtbali (PhD student)

I did my master studies on mathematical modelling of infectious disease and control of such diseases using a differential game approach at Tarbiat Modares University (TMU), Iran.

I am interested in evolutionary biology, evolutionary game theory, sexual selection, simulation modelling, mathematical biology and genetics.

Anna Waffender (Research assistant)

Before coming to Freiburg for my Master’s degree, I finished my Bachelor’s degree in biology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz with a thesis on strain competition between defensive bacterial symbionts of Lagria beetles. For my Master’s thesis, I developed simulation models relating to sexual selection. I am now working as a research assistant to collect data for a review of sex differences in animals.

Kartikey Awasthi (Master's student)

I am a Master's student from India (at IISER, Mohali) studying theoretical modelling of social behaviours like parental care. I am fascinated with almost all topics of evolutionary theory and behavioural ecology ranging from sexual selection to eusociality. I greatly enjoy learning new things and teaching juniors.

Outside academia, you can chat with me about linguistics, history of science, animated movies, mythology, and basically anything!

Marilena Almeida (Master's student)

I have been enjoying life as a biology student in Freiburg for five years now, and my interest in evolution has grown more and more. In my Bachelor's thesis and on a field trip to the Ivory Coast, I already studied the ecology and evolution of termites and was infected with Prof. Korb's passion. For my Master's thesis, I am now enthusiastically learning how to build evolutionary models.

In my free time I like to travel. I love getting to know new cultures in cities and trying new food, but I enjoy hiking in nature just as much.

Carola Sigle (Technician)

I finished my biology degree in 2001 with a thesis on life-history variation in Anodonta mussels. Since 2004, I've worked as a technician at the University of Freiburg, providing assistance with both teaching and research. I enjoy supervising students in their lab courses.

Karoline Fritzsche (Postdoc)

Karo worked on sexual selection and the evolution of mating systems, particularly in species with intense mating competition among females.

She now works as a pharmaceutical representative for Pfizer.

Mehregan Ebrahimi (Postdoc)

Mehregan worked on modelling the evolutionary responses of animals to changing environments, using Drosophila suzukii as a model species.

Paula Weddeling (Master's student)

Paula did her Master's thesis on simulating the evolution of “honest signalling” in sex-role reversed systems.
